Pawan Kumar Tinu, SAD-BJP
SAD-BJP candidate from Jalandhar parliamentary segment Pawan Kumar Tinu faces tough task in making roads to victory. When asked about why people should vote for him in the Lok Sabha polls, Tinu said that it was high time the country had a strong and decisive leader like Narendra Modi: Excerpts:
Why people should vote for SAD-BJP combine when your state government is on backfoot on development issues in Jalandhar especially bad roads?
Pawan Kumar Tinnu: I admit roads of the city are in poor condition, but will get them repair. The deputy CM in his recent visit had already apologised and we are not Congress who will cheat. People know that this election is very crucial and this will set a tone for our future. It’s high time for the country to have a strong and decisive leader like Modi.
What is your poll plank and on what issues are you contesting polls?
Pawan Kumar Tinnu: Development of Jalandhar is my main concern. I will not promise moon to the people, but my main aim will be to bring special projects for youth, sports and leather industry, as well as providing basic amenities like sewerage, roads, education and infrastructure for villagers.
Why did your government not pay heed to these issues in the past seven years of their rule?
Pawan Kumar Tinnu: It was the SAD-BJP government that opened colleges in Kartarpur and a sports college in Jalandhar. Many villages are have been provided with sewerage and clean water supplies. When you have opposition government at the Centre, state faces financial crisis. Jalandhar will flourish if I become the MP.
You have been accused by your party leader and singer Hans Raj Hans as not a good leader for the society. Why is it so?
Pawan Kumar Tinnu: Hans is my brother and we are part of one SAD family. There may have been some issues with him but all is settled now. Like me, Hans is also a dedicated soldier of the party. As per as my character is concerned, I am an open book before the people. I have risen before the Jalandhar people from an ordinary family. When I became Admapur MLA, no such allegations came from any quarter.
Why the non-performance of Mohinder Singh Kaypee missing in your speech. Is this some political strategy?
Pawan Kumar Tinnu: No it’s not any kind of political strategy. Non-performance of KP is before everyone. I say and will bring the change that I can. People are not fool.
What is your USP?
Pawan Kumar Tinnu: I belong to an ordinary family. My interest in politics is because of the struggle I have faced. Chaudhary family is full of leaders. Main neta nhi hoon…main beta hoon. (I am not a leader….I am a son). I am a struggler and will give in everything for the development of Jalandhar.
Sukhwinder Singh Kotli, 56, BSP contender
What are your plans for the development of the city?
Sukhwinder Singh Kotli: My main focus is on education as education is not affordable to the poor people these days. The ruling SAD Akali has not done anything for providing basic amenities to the public. We will bring revolution so that poor does not not suffer.
What are your plans to improve the local industry, especially leather and sports?
Sukhwinder Singh Kotli: There is a need to resolve the problems of the local industry. The small-scale industry is going away from the city due to heavy taxes and undue pressures by the SAD government. I will make sure to relieve the industrialists from these problems.
What are your local concerns and main poll plank?
Sukhwinder Singh Kotli: The SAD-BJP is anti-Dalits. What will they do for their development when they are not able to provide water supply and better roads. They can just talk big. I will work hard for every section of the society.
What is your USP for polls?
Sukhwinder Singh Kotli: Both, the Congress and SAD-BJP, are two sides of the same coin. The two just make big promises and are only indulging in politics and not focusing on the development of the people. I will work harder to get the benefits and development of people and ensure justice to every section of the society.
Chaudhary Santokh, Congress
Congress candidate Chaudhary Santokh shares his views on various issues concerning his constituency.
What are your plans to im[prove the local industry, especially leather and sports?
Chaudhary Santokh: The existing industry in Jalandhar has got a raw deal from the state government. The industry is shifting day-by-day due to lot of taxes levied on them. I will try work on providing more benefits for these industries so that they don’t have to move to neighbouring states. I would provide industrial package and give boost to employment here.
What are your area of concerns and main poll plank?
Chaudhary Santokh: The residents here are fed up with the pot holes. Casualties happen every day and people get injured. It was during the Congress government till 2007 that roads were made in Jalandhar. Surprisingly, the BJP which claims to be an urban party, too failed to provide this basic facility. We will focus on giving the basic amenities to the localites. My focus will be on promoting sports, industries and providing basic civic amenities in the city.
Do you envisage any mega project, either in industrial or IT sector for Jalandhar?
Chaudhary Santokh: I will certainly pitch in to get some tax holiday for the sports and hand tools industry. Our government had been supporting the local industry for setting up a multi-crore hand tool cluster in Jalandhar with funding for the common utility high-end facilities, but the local leaders did not let the project get through.
What is your USP for polls?
Chaudhary Santokh: There was a strong anti-incumbency factor against the SAD-BJP alliance in the state. People are fed up with Akalis as they have deprived people of their basic amenities. The dalits had always supported the Congress and it is time to prove this in this Lok Sabha elections.
