Notwithstanding the 'sympathy' shown by some senior party leaders with revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia over the drug racket allegations against him, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa said the state party unit would move the Supreme Court (SC) demanding a CBI probe to ascertain Majithia's role.

Rejecting former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh's recent statement that "it's unfair to blame Majithia" in the drug case and the "love" for Majithia shown by Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha Sunil Jakhar during the debate over the issue in the assembly on Tuesday, Bajwa said such statements did not reflect the party's stand.

"If these leaders are giving the clean chit (to Majithia), it's their problem. But from day one, the party's stand is clear that since Jagdish Bhola had named Majithia as the kingpin of the drug racket, a fair probe is needed to ascertain his role. If he is innocent, why is the state government shying away from a CBI inquiry," said the PPCC chief who was here to address the party's dharna against power shortage in the state.

Bajwa had earlier moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, demanding a CBI inquiry, but these pleas were rejected by the court.

"People know about the reality of those Congress leaders who are supporting Majithia," Bajwa said.
He said the party had consulted a few of its senior lawyers in Delhi and documentation was being done to file a plea in the Supreme Court, demanding a CBI probe in the case.

The PPCC chief also took a dig at chief minister Parkash Singh Badal's announcement to hold a morcha in Haryana in case the state government there does not withdraw the Act for a separate gurdwara body.

"This is another move by Badal to befool the Sikhs and use them for personal gains. Actually, Badal will resign during the congregation of Sikhs in Amritsar on July 27, and appoint Sukhbir as the next chief minister.
"I challenge Badal that if he is a true Sikh, he should ask all his family members, including Majithia, Adesh Partap Singh Kairon and Harsimrat Kaur Badal, to resign from their ministries and join the morcha," demanded Bajwa.
