Owning allegiance to Communist Party Marxist (Pasla), local farmers on Thursday blocked traffic on the Nakodar–Kapurthala road and staged a protest against the alleged non-procurement of paddy crop on Mallian Kalan bus stand here nearly for two hours.
Addressing the protesters, the party leaders GS Sanghera and Manohar Singh Gill alleged that procurement agencies were not procuring the produce and forcing farmers to sell paddy at extremely lower rates. They demanded that damage and percentage of discolouration should be raised from 3% to 7% and moisture content from 17% to 20%.
The protesters accused the SAD-BJP government of being anti-farmers despite its daily drum beating about being their custodian. The farmers alleged that their paddy had not been purchased for the past seven days.
The administration deputed a circle revenue officer (Kanoogo) to receive a memorandum from the agitating farmers but they refused to meet him and threatened to stage protest on Friday.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Varun Roojam visited Shahkot and Nakodar grain markets and reviewed procurement process.
