ICSE Class 10: Hoshiarpur’s Nivedita tops in north India

With 98% marks, Hoshiarpur girl Nivedita has topped the northern region in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), Class-10 results. With 52,740 students, the maximum enrolment for the ICSE was from the northern region — Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi - National Capital Region (NCR).


In all, 1.49 lakh students appeared for the exam, and 98.28% passed. The figure for the northern region was 97.49%.

Nivedita, enrolled for Class 11 in science (non-medical) in Chandigarh, dreams of becoming a scientist.

“Most students end up enrolling for engineering, and the aim is the IITs. I, however, wish to enrol at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and start my career in scientific research,” said the 16-year-old, who did her Class 10 from St Jose ph’s Convent School in Hoshiarpur.

She said many had advised her to “think professionally”. “But my heart lies in research. I know it is a long jour ney, but I am ready for it.” Physics is her favourite subject and she wants to do BSc in the subject before going into research.

She got perfect 100 in math and computer science, 99 in physics, but in English she got “relatively low” 92: “Two-three extra marks in English could have made me the national topper, but I am really happy with whatever I have achieved.”

As per the media reports, Shreyas Sudhaman and Apoorva Narayanswamy from Bangalore; Siddhartha Shankar Kahali from Jamshedpur; and Rishabh Raj from Rourkela, are the national toppers with a score of 98.6%.

After Nivedita, Delhi-NCR girl Riya Singh stood second in the northern region with 97.8%, followed by Ronnie Mondal of Haryana who got 97%.

For Nivedita, “consistency and hard work paid off”: “I focused on understanding the concepts rather than memorising theories.” Nivedita’s father, Vimal Kumar Vij, is a businessman and mother Neerja Sood is an English lecturer in Hoshiarpur.
