A 27-year-old undertrial, booked under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, ended his life by hanging himself in the toilet in the wee hours of Thursday at modern jail here.

Mandeep Singh alias Munnu, the deceased, was booked by Goraya police on January 19 and he was sent to judicial custody the next day.

Parents alleged that inhuman atmosphere in the barracks at the jail perturbed Mandeep, due to which he took this extreme step.

Mandeep used his shawl to hang himself in the toilet and he was spotted hanged by Rachhpal Singh, a fellow inmate, at around 5am.

Mandeep had reportedly complained of some health problem and was administered injection by the prison doctors at around 3am, Harbhajan Ram, the father of deceased told newsmen.

"When the police informed me that they have arrested my son with white a banned substance, I did not try to intervene in their investigations and said that my son should be punished for his misdoings, if he had done so. However, my son was innocent and the police trapped him falsely," he said.

"I met him in the prison yesterday and he was disturbed with the prison atmosphere. The whole barrack was very dirty and I was surprised how they kept over 50 undertrials there. My son demanded `10,000 from me so that he may arrange basic necessities for him in the prison," he added further.

Additional Jail Superintendent Vikramjit Penthe, when contacted, refuted the charges of inhumane atmosphere.

"He was kept like other undertrials. Perhaps, he was sensitive as he took the imprisonment to his heart. He was sent here only a few days ago," Penthe said.
