A day after Youth Congress president Vikramjeet Chaudhary accused him of using red beacon atop his vehicle in violation to the model code of conduct, BJP MLA from Jalandhar Central Manoranjan Kalia on Thursday said “the law does not permit him from using the red beacon”.

Justifying the use of red beacon on his Innova car, Kalia said: “He used the red beacon when the model code of conduct was into force partially since elections in Punjab were over.”

Addressing a press conference here, the BJP MLA said even the Supreme Court’s ruling, asking the state gover nments to minimise the use of red beacons was not implemented in letter and spirit in Punjab.

“In this scenario, I feel pity for the Punjab Youth Congress chief, who is raking up the issue just to merit the media’s attention.

“In fact, his tactics reflect his frustration, as he can foresee his father Santokh Chaudhary’s defeat from Jalandhar,” Kalia said, while taking a dig at the Chaudharies.

Kalia, meanwhile, also rubbished Vikramjeet Chaudhary’s statement where he claimed that red beacon vehicles were being used to supply drugs.

“Chaudhary’s and my grandfathers were head masters almost in the same period of time, but I still live in a small house of my grandfather, where as the wealth of the Chaudharies crossed hundreds of crores,” claimed Kalia.

“They owe an explanation that how they earned this money in such a short period, as Santokh Chaudhary remained a cabinet minister only once. Where this ill-gotten money has come from? I don’t think they are into drug business,” said Kalia.

Attacking Chaudhary for raking up the issue against Kalia, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Monty Sehgal said: “I am surprised to know that Vikrajit has pointed a finger at Kalia. Vikrajit himself has been using red beacon to evade toll taxes and the gunmen allotted to his father. How can he point a figure towards others?”

Notably, Sehgal, who once was very close to the Youth Congress chief, has joined SAD just ahead of the polls.
