A number of auto junk dealers have encroached upon footpaths and portions of road at the stretch between Ladowali Road and Alaska Chowk.
These dealers have encroached on the road (with a width of over 20 feet) to not less than 10 feet where they store their junk material. The Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ) has turned a blind eye to the problem.
Around 30 dealers operate at Ladowali Road where they keep heavy scrap, which creates hindrance in the smooth flow of traffic and causes huge inconvenience to motorists and commuters.
The motorists have to slow down their vehicles, which in turn causes traffic snarls on several occasions.
The pedestrians too find it very difficult to move on the road. Residents have been asking the civic body to make the footpaths encroachment-free for long.
Vikrant Verma, superintendent, tehbazari wing of municipal corporation, said they had warned the scrap store owners many times but to no avail.
"We have issued them challans and seized their scrap many times in the past. But they are hardly bothered by this," he said, adding that the MC will soon take strict action against the violators.
It has been learnt that the tehbazari wing gets bribes from these dealers and hence the encroachments have not been removed even after local residents raised the issue on several occasions.
