Text messaging while driving vehicles has also emerged as a major distraction to cause road crashes in India.

During a media workshop on ‘driving skills for life’ organised by Ford India here, Mohit Gautam, training manager, revealed that earlier attending mobile phone calls was one of the major reasons for the road crashes.

“A recent survey concludes that text messaging has topped as a major reason, instead of attending mobile calls, leading to road crashes,” he said, adding that the young drivers were mainly found indulged into on drive mobile texting.

He said that mobile texting distraction should be avoided while mobile phones calls should be attended after stopping the vehicles at the road sides.

The expert suggested pregnant women and the kids should not be allowed to sit on the front seats of the cars. “The seat belts cannot ensure complete safety of the kids, who by virtue of their small body size, will be at risk of not getting properly gripped during the road crashes or emergencies. The kids and pregnant women should sit at rear seats,” he said.

He said that not wearing seat belts while traveling in the front row seat of the air bags fitted cars could prove fatal since these air bags would emerge out at a speed of nearly 250 kms per hour during road crashes. “In such conditions, these airbags can pose serious danger to life, as front row occupants will be automatically pushed towards the front glass to ultimately confront these air bags,” he said.

He stressed upon importance of reading vehicle manual to better understand air pressure of vehicle’s tyres so as to ensure safe driving. “The air pressure of tyres play significant role in safe driving especially during rainy seasons,” he said.

He said that Ford India had launched ‘driving skills for life’ programme as part of its social corporate responsibility while over 200 trainers were operational in the country.
