A three-year-old girl, who was undergoing treatment for the past month at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Research, Chandigarh, after allegedly being raped and beaten up, succumbed to her injuries on Saturday evening.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) HPS Parmar said that the cause of death would be known after the post mortem report is made available.

Mohalla Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar resident Shallu Chohan was earlier arrested for allegedly raping his niece, but the medical report of the victim, prepared by Hoshiarpur civil hospital on September 10, could not confirm rape.

However, sources alleged that the accused had beaten up the child on instigation from her mother, adding that she had illicit relations with the accused. The victim was admitted in a paediatric clinic in Jalandhar, where she was treated for one day before being referred to Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences.

When her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to the civil hospital on September 10, from where she was later referred to PGIMER for surgery on her intestines, which had been ruptured by Chohan's blows.

While the report regarding the samples sent to the chemical examiner for confirmation of rape has not been received, police have added Section 302 (murder) in the FIR registered against the mother and Chohan earlier.

Station house officer (SHO) Subhash Bath said that the body was handed over to the family after post mortem, and the police will bear all expenses of treatment at PGIMER.

“Jalandhar (rural) senior superintendent of police has constituted a special investigation team to probe into the case. We have booked the victim's mother, who is in police protection. She will be arrested after the cremation,” he added.
