A newly-married 19-year-old woman admitted to the civil hospital with grave injuries after her husband allegedly tried to strangulate her using ropes, the woman's parents have alleged.

Balbir Kaur, a resident of Hussainpur village, said that her daughter Kiran Kalyan eloped with Gaurav, a resident of Safipur village on September 18 this year and they both got married on September 24 in a gurdwara. "Gaurav's family refused to recognise the marriage. The couple had been living in a rented house at Basti Danishmanda in Jalandhar since then," she added.

"Over the last month, Gaurav and Kiran had been living through a strained relationship, after interference by Gaurav's parents. They were quarreling frequently. Gaurav was not allowing us to meet our daughter and she was feeling a bit lonely."

"When I came to know that Gaurav planned to migrate to Spain, where his father was settled permanently, along with his mother, and was not willing to take me, I protested. This led to further tensions," alleged Kiran.

"On Thursday, Gaurav asked me to accompany him to visit some of his relatives near Razapur," she said.

"We were nearing our home and were on foot near Razapur village, when he tried to strangulate me using a rope. However, headlights of a passing vehicle blinded him. He then ran away leaving the rope in my neck," she added.

Ravi Kumar, her brother, said, "She called me for help. We reached the spot and admitted her to the Kapurthala civil hospital. She told me that Gaurav had asking her to get Rs 1 lakh from her family."

Niranjan Singh, the uncle of Gaurav, who was at Sadar Police station, claimed that all Kiran's claims were lies. "Gaurav has no plans to migrate to Spain. How could he do this to a girl, he has married against his parents' wishes," he said.

Meanwhile, the police have started investigations into the case.
