More than a year and two complaints to local SSP, a 24-year-old class XII resident has been unable to get an FIR registered against a travel agent, who has allegedly duped him of Rs 5.5 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad on a study-visa.
Pardeep Singh, a resident of Nathu Chahal village, said: "I have lost faith on the district police. I moved the first application on September 19, 2011. This was marked to the NRI police station SHO by the SSP, but no action was taken. In fact, the travel agent started threatening me after that."
"I the submitted a reminder of the same complaint to the SSP on December 21, 2011. This time, my statement was registered and the police also called the travel agent, Inderjit Singh, a resident of Desarpur village. A detailed discussion was held in which panchayat members and other prominent residents of the village appeared from my side. A compromise was arrived at and Inderjit agreed to return Rs 5.5 lakh within two months," he said.
He added that after that meeting, nearly a year had passed and that neither was his money returned nor was a case registered against the travel agent.
Pardeep added: "In my visa application, Inderjit had forged some financial statements and had overstated my financial assets, without informing me. When embassy officials quizzed me, I failed to justify the financial situation. My case was rejected and my file was stamped with a statement that I was not to be allowed entry to the UK for ten years."
He claimed that he and the travel agent had agreed that his money would be returned if he (the travel agent) failed to send him aboard.
"The casual approach of Kapurthala police has ensured that the travel agent has managed to flee. His office is locked. The police must register a case against him and help me in getting back my money. I have been harassed by police inaction and the loss of Rs 5.5 lakh."
When contacted, SSP Kapurthala Inderbir Singh said: "The case was filed before I joined. I will look into the matter on merit, whenever the complainant approaches me with his grievances."
