The Punjab State Commission for NRIs has directed the state government and secretary Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to access provisions of creating separate quota for NRIs for providing tube-well connections.

The commission passed the directions while handling a complaint of a UK based NRI who originally hailed from village Thatta Nawan in Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil of district Kapurthala.

The complainant had applied for the tube-well connection in December 2011 and deposited the initial fee but the PSPCL failed to provide him connection even after passing of nearly two years.

The complainant had sent a several communications to the PSPCL demanding the early release of connection but PSPCL replied that there was no separate quota for NRIs so the application would be treated under General category.

“NRI affairs is the priority of Punjab Government and state government is formulating new schemes for 10% quota for the NRIs in housing and industrial plots. The Punjab government had also formulated a scheme for infrastructure developmental activities in their villages and rural/urban areas, under plan scheme NRI-1 and reservation of wards of NRIs is also there in educational institutes,” the order passed by chairperson NRI commission Arvind Kumar ruled.

“Why not the tube-well connections on priority basis under NRI quota to facilitate NRIs who wants to visit their motherland to have proper cultivation of their land is launched on the analogy of other schemes introduced by the government,” the commission said.

The commission had further directed the state government to act swiftly in the matter and apprise the commission before, October 15, the next date of hearing.
