The police commissionerate will write to the union ministry of external affairs (MEA) to get visa details of Punjabi singer Garry Sandhu, a friend of Ramneet Uppal ‘Romy’, who was convicted of a murderous assault on Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza, for allegedly helping the convict flee the country after jumping parole.

Police had grilled Sandhu for around four hours on Monday evening. Sandhu reached the DCP office at 4 pm and stayed till 8 pm. Deputy Commissioner of police Naveen Singla, along with SHO of police station 7, Hardayal Singh, recorded Sandhu’s statement. Sandhu, a resident of Rurka Kalan in Jalandhar, refuted allegations that he had helped Romy flee the country.

A police officer said Sandhu accepted that Romy was a close friend and had known him for a few years. He said he had only helped in Romy’s sister’s marriage. He further said Sandhu had also shown details of his passport in which it was found the singer had visited five countries in the last four months, including New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Germany.

Sandhu claimed he did not know Romy’s whereabouts. Copies of Sandhu’s passport have also been taken by the police commissionerate for further investigation. Sandhu claimed that he had gone abroad alone to meet his relatives.

DCP Naveen Singla said the police would contact MEA to get details of Sandhu’s visa. He added that the police had got details about his common friends, including their names and addresses.

Police had claimed if they found the singer’s involvement in helping Romy flee, action would be initiated against him as per law. When a fast track court in Jalandhar had sentenced the accused on October 24 last year, the singer had reached the court complex to console Romy.
