The district unit of senior partner in the ruling alliance, the Shiromani Akali Dal, continues to be 'headless' as the existing unit, which was dissolved before the re-election of Sukhbir Badal as party president, is yet to be constituted.
On September 3, Sukhbir Badal was re-elected president of the SAD at Amritsar and before that the district unit of the party was dissolved and it needed re-constitution as per the election commission norms.
Even after more than two months since Sukhbir's election, district presidents of both urban and rural units had not been announced by the party, leaving the coordination between the alliance partners - SAD and BJP - unattended.
Earlier, Gurcharan Singh Channi was heading the district (urban) unit, while cabinet minister Ajit Singh Kohar was president of the rural unit.
When contacted, Channi admitted that technically he is no more president of the district unit, but as a party leader he is still working as a 'bridge' between the workers and leaders.
Asked about the process of election of the district president of the SAD, Channi said “in the normal process, district heads of the party are nominated by the party's national president”.
It is learnt that only in Jalandhar, even in all other districts, too, no SAD unit has been technically installed, as all were dissolved before the election of national president of SAD and had not been revived so far, Channi said.
Meanwhile, sources said the SAD's coordination committee to liaison with BJP was also yet to be constituted, which had resulted in 'fissures' among the leaders of the ruling alliance, which could be gauged from the continuous tussle between senior deputy mayor of SAD, Kamaljit Singh Bhatia and BJP's mayor Sunil Jyoti.
On three occasions, Bhatia had expressed his displeasure in public over the autocratic style of the mayor's functioning and had even boycotted the MC proceedings. The matter was earlier resolved with the intervention of senior leaders of the district BJP, but both are again out to confront each other in public.
“I have reported my grievances to former district president GS Channi. Despite utmost efforts from my side, the SAD leaders are being ignored before taking important decisions and it leaves us humiliated,” Bhatia said.
