St Joseph School has decided to reduce bus fares after a meeting with parenst, school management and the district transport officer, Dalwinderjit Singh.
The DTO said that the school authorities were charging more for the trasnport srvuice than many other schools in the city.
"The managment was citing an increase in diesel prices and increased operational expenses as the rationale for the charges. However, after parents' protest and discussion, the school agreed to take back the hike," he added.
Previously, the principal had maintained that the transporter was autonomous and the school could not interfere. Sanjay Sehgal, adviser member, RTI and Grievances Cell of Punjab Congress Committee, and a parent hit by the hike had requested the DC to ask the school to reduce its rates.
"We were earlier paying a bus fee of Rs 750 per child per month. In January 2013, the fee was increased to Rs 850 and now, we had been asked to pay Rs 1,500. Even AC buses in some of the city's private schools charge Rs 850," he added.
