Environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal on Tuesday met Indian ambassador at Manila LD Ralte to apprise him of the problems being faced by the Punjabis in Philippines.
Thousands of Punjabis are settled in Manila for years and are engaged in the finance business there.
"In the meeting, which lasted for 45 minutes, Seechewal, expressed concern over the security of Punjabis there in view of the killing of the Punjabis over the last decade. He also apprised him of the efforts being made to save water reservoirs in Punjab from pollution," Gurwinder Singh, a representative of Nirmal Kutiya revealed.
Seechewal also demanded, reportedly, passports in Punjabi language and stressed the need for simplification of immigration procedures.
Ralte was also apprised of the plan of opening a special school to teach Punjabi in Manila to maintain the connect of the younger with Punjab and its culture.
Seechewal was accompanied by representatives of different gurdwaras in the Philippines during the meeting.
