SIT formed to probe thrashing of pregnant woman; report in 10 days

The rural police have formed a special investigation team (SIT) to inquire the incident of thrashing of pregnant woman, after which she suffered a miscarriage.


After the incident, the villagers held a protest against the Lambra police’s alleged inaction on Tuesday evening at Safipur village of the district.

The SIT will be headed by deputy superintendent of police (detective) Ashwani Kumar along with CIA staff in-charge Piyara Singh. It will submit a report to superintendent of police (D) HPS Khakh within 10 days. The residents of Safipur village along with sarpanch met Khakh and demanded action against the Lambra police and the accused.

According to information, Amarjeet Singh (30) along with his four-months pregnant wife Gurbinder Kaur (26) were going to pay obeisance at a religious shrine at Gill village on a motorcycle on Tuesday morning.

Sarpanch Manjeet Singh alle ged that as the couple reached near Gujjran Walan bridge in Safipur village, some unidentified people of the Gujjar community allegedly stopped them and started thrashing them without a reason. He alleged that when they reached Lambra police station to lodge a complaint against the accused, the SHO pressured them to reach a compromise.

A case was registered after they held a protest against the police. In the meantime, Kaur was admitted to the civil hospital, where doctors said she had suffered a miscarriage.

Lambra SHO Bittan Kumar said a case was registered against 11 unidentified people. He added that allegations levelled against him are baseless.
