City residents are facing inconvenience due to the trees, which stand in the middle of roads. Courtesy: Municipal corporation.
At many places in the city, these trees create bottleneck, affecting the smooth flow of traffic. Such trees should be uprooted and roads should be widened, the residents demanded.
HT team noticed two such trees opposite Hans Raj Mahila Mahavidylaya on Maqsudan road, one on Ladowali road and another opposite Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) causing hindrance to the flow of traffic.
These trees are also resulting into temporary encroachments on Ladowali road as the shopkeepers are misusing the space between tree and their shops by placing their items to attract customers.
"I am surprised why the municipal authorities failed to remove them before laying the roads. Taking u-turn from the divider situated near HMV is very difficult for a heavy vehicle," Jasdip Singh, a resident of Maqsudan told HT.
HT inquiries revealed that the trees on Maqsudan road and Ladowali fall under the jurisdiction of municipal corporation and the tree opposite PIMS is under JDA jurisdiction.
Range forest officer Surjit Singh said that the roads were laid by the authorities without taking prior permission from the forest department for cutting the trees. Whenever the authorities concerned would approach us we would definitely consider the issue keeping the public convenience in mind, he said.
The trees on road are also becoming the cause of traffic jams and minor-collisions on the roads, said a traffic cop, adding that, "If these trees are removed, the bottlenecks would be cleared and traffic would flow smoothly."
During peak hours, vehicles remain stuck in traffic jams due to bottleneck created by these trees. The authorities should remove it for public convenience. Deepak Sharma, a local.
We have submitted written request to the municipal corporation to remove these trees a year ago, but no action has been taken so far. Why the municipal authorities are insensitive towards public problems, it is beyond understanding. Santosh Gosain, a homemaker.
We have prepared an estimate to remove these trees after checking the feasibility from the forest department. In the next meeting of House, we will take up the matter for approval, necessary fee will be deposited to the forest department thereafter. Kulwinder Singh, Additional Commissioner (B&R) Municipal Corporation.
