Jalandhar city police have arrested two women and claimed to have uncovered an attempt to commit a financial fraud of Rs 30 crore on Saturday. Accused Sukhwant Kaur of Jahangir village in Amritsar and Harjit Kaur of Shahkot have been arrested on charges of producing an unauthorised cheque of a private firm to withdraw Rs 30 crore, Assistant commissioner of police (West), Ravinderpal Singh Sandhu said at a press conference.

“On November 12 last year, Sukhwant Kaur and Harjit Kaur had come to Danish Manda Area branch of the Punjab National Bank with a cheque of Rs 30 crore of a private firm Jhanav textile based in Kathua in Jammu.”

The bank branch manager, who found the women suspicious, told them that such a large account couldn’t be cleared immediately. He asked the two women to come to the bank in the evening to get the money.

“The women did not return and the bank manager then reported the matter to the police,” he said.
Harjit’s husband Balkar Singh and his friend Ranjit Singh were also with the women when they went to the bank.

The manager took a photocopy of the cheque, without informing them. He also got one of the women to part with her number.

“The bank manager informed the Kathua-based company officials about the alleged attempt to withdraw the cash. The company officials denied having issued any such cheque and also lodged a complaint with the city police,” said Sandhu.
