A 13-year-old killed his 12-year-old friend after he refused to pay up Rs 250 which he had lost on a cricket bet.
The incident happened at Daspara area of Liluah in Howrah district of West Bengal. The 13-year-old suspect broke down to a marathon interrogation by Liluah police station officers.
Sources said the accused had got into a bet of Rs 250 over an IPL match with the victim about 10 days ago and there had been repeated altercations between the two after the latter was unable to pay the money.
On Thursday, the accused had got into a fracas with the victim again and amidst heated argument, he hit his friend with a brick on the head.
The accused had also tried to conceal the body with bricks and bushes inside an abandoned workshop at Daspara area.
The victim’s father had filed a missing complaint and after police recovered his body on Saturday night, they started an investigation, following which they detained the accused and upon interrogation, he confessed that he committed the crime.
“The accused was produced at a juvenile court and was sent to a government home at Santragachi in Howrah,” a senior police officer said, adding that the home authorities might seek the help of a psychiatrist to understand the accused better.
Police also said that there was one another eye-witness who would be summoned for questioning soon.
“Normally, it would not be possible for one person to carry out the entire crime, the way it had been done. We suspect that the second one is equally involved. His role, if at all, will be clear once he is interrogated,” the officer said.
