The Kolkata Police confirmed the Park Street rape incident after it arrested two youths on Saturday, rubbishing Mamata Banerjee’s claim that the incident had been “cooked up” to malign her government.
The 37-year-old woman from Behala was lured with a job offer from a prominent nightclub, beaten and raped inside a car on the pretext of giving her a lift on the night of February 5. The victim had furnished names and identified one of the accused as Lavi Gidwani. The FIR was registered on February 9.
On Saturday, the police arrested Ruman Khan alias Nishad Alam alias Tussi, a resident of Beniapukur and Sumit Bajaj, a resident of Gariahat, and recovered Bajaj’s Honda City that had been used for the crime.
“One of the accused raped her while others sexually assaulted her. Those arrested are married and engaged in business,” said joint commissioner of police (crime), Damayanti Sen, at a press conference.
Sen said the police was, however, yet to arrest the main accused. “We are not naming him since we haven’t been able to arrest him,” she said.
“Many said I was a liar. I even received threat calls. Today, I went to Lalbazar and identified the driver of the car,” the victim told HT. She has now been provided round-the-clock security.
Police is now hunting for two other accused Naser and Johny. According to police, on the night of the crime the accused used names of their friends to conceal their identities, which had led to the initial controversy. One of the accused, Tussi bears a scratch mark on his shoulder, a result of the scuffle inside the car.
