Fifty days after the Amri fire in which 91 patients and two hospital staffers lost their lives, the Kolkata police on Friday arrested two hospital directors, Dr MK Chhetri, 92, and Dr Pronab Dasgupta, 66, both top ranking physicians of the city, on charges of negligence. This takes the total number of arrests in the Amri case to 13.

Chhetri and Dasgupta were later produced in a city court, which remanded them in police custody till February 3. They were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Pleading for bail, their counsels told the court that their clients were eminent physicians. Chhetri’s counsel cited that his client was ailing and needed medical care.

All the directors, except RS Agarwal, are now lodged in Alipore Correctional Home. Agarwal is admitted in the state-run SSKM Hospital following ill health since his arrest on December 9 — the day of the incident.

During investigations, the police found the fire started in the hospital basement, which, according to the fire brigade, had been turned into clinics and pharmacy illegally. It was supposed to be reserved for parking cars. The police also found that the fire licence expired on November 30.
