A 59-year-old businessman was arrested at Kolkata airport on Friday for allegedly molesting a 19-year-old Japanese co-passenger sitting next to him on a Thai Airways flight arriving from Bangkok.
The crew got in touch with airline officials and other agencies at the Kolkata airport soon after the aircraft landed. The police swung into action and arrested the accused.
The girl said in her complaint that the accused molested her twice during the flight. The accused, identified as Narayan Singh, however, claimed he had no intention of molesting the girl but touched her accidentally while stretching after a nap.
Though it was alleged that the man was drunk, the police said they did not find him in a drunken state.
The police said the girl was to visit the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, as part of her plan to study Indian culture. “We have informed the Japanese consulate after the incident of molestation was reported by the victim,” Santosh Nimbalkar, additional deputy commissioner of police said.
