A class 3 student of a primary school in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district died on Friday, days after he was mercilessly thrashed by his teacher who allegedly beat him with a stick before banging his head against a wall.

According to the police, two students, Bapi and Tanmay, both seven-year-old, were squabbling with each other on Wednesday when their school teacher intervened.

She banged their heads against each other, beat them with a stick and banged Bapi’s head against a brick wall.

The boy went home but didn’t report the matter to his parents. After reaching home, he started vomiting, his parents took him to a local hospital. Eventually, he was referred to the state-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata. And in the hospital, he breathed his last at 5 am on Friday.

Once news of Bapi’s death broke out, angry locals attacked and vandalised the residence of the accused teacher. Later on, she was handed over to the police and a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was slapped against her.

Corporal punishment has been banned by an order of the Supreme Court and later through the Right to Education legislations.

“The teacher was earlier suspended because of her rough behaviour and inclination to torture students. Later, she rejoined following a high court order. But this incident proves she has not learnt any lessons,” said the victim’s neighbour, Dhananjay Sarkar.

The boy’s parents, who were in deep shock, did not ablemake any comments.
