Saying that a kind of Goondaism (hooliganism) is on across the state, Narayanan said that such violence has nothing to do with degradation political culture. The governor was speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration event of the literary festival at the Victoria Memorial on Wednesday.

“I made my position quiet clear. The last two to three days have been distressing and disturbing,” said Narayanan.

The governor said, “We can’t should not accept the violence that is taking place. I believe it is the responsibility of administration to ensure that law and order is maintained and action is taken against whoever responsible,” Narayanan said.

“Police has to be impartial as far as possible. I think a state like Bengal cannot accept this. I think action should be taken and will be taken,” he added. To a question whether he has asked the state government to take steps, the Governor said that he, in his capacity as the governor, is a part of the state government. “How can I tell them?” he asked.

Quizzed on whether he was happy with the role of the police in the wake of the recent events, he said whenever there is a major slide in the law and order situation there are questions over the role of administration and law enforcement agencies.

Narayanan also expressed concern over fresh crib deaths in Malda Medical College Hospital. A total 27 infants have died at the hospital. Narayanan had earlier voiced concern over the assault on college teachers in the state.

“The local administration and college authorities should take steps to see such incidents don’t recur. This would also help improve relations between students and teachers,” he had said. His remarks follow a fresh spell of violence in Bengal.
