Baby Bibi (25), a homemaker and a resident of Rogabati colony under Malda’s Ratua police station, was seriously injured on Thursday night when her husband, Lalon Chowdhury (30), a daily labourer, reportedly tried to beat her to death. Lalon also attacked and tried to strangle his one-year-old daughter who was severely injured. A complaint has been lodged but the accused is on the run. Sources said Lalon was angry with his wife for giving birth to three daughters one after another.
The mother and daughter are now admitted at Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH).
Sources said that Lalon married Baby around nine years ago. It is alleged that he started torturing his wife a year ago, after the birth of Nesha Khatun, the couple’s youngest daughter. It was usually the same issue - the birth of three girls. Incidentally, the couple lost one of their daughters, Dulari Khatun (8), a few days ago.
Baby wasn’t at home on Thursday night when Lalon began torturing Nesha but she arrived in time to stop him from strangling her. Lalon then turned his attention to Baby and started beating her with bamboo and iron rods. Hearing Baby’s screams, other villagers rushed to her aid and he fled from the house.
Hospital sources said that Baby and her daughter have injuries all over their bodies. Baby has sustained a serious injury on her eye.
From her hospital bed on Friday, Baby said, “We had three daughters - Piyari Khatun (8), Dulari and Nesha. My husband started torturing me after Nesha was bor n. He was angry I had given birth to three girls.”
She said, “A few months ago, when Dulari fell seriously ill, my husband didn’t give a single penny for her treatment. Her hands and legs swelled up and my daughter died only 18 days ago.”
“Now my husband was planning to kill Nesha. On Thursday night, when I reached home, I saw Lalon fling Nesha to the floor and heard my daughter crying in pain. When I protested, Lalon tried to strangle Nesha. He then attacked me and said he will kill me to end all his problems,” Baby added.
A senior officer of Ratua PS said, “We have got a written complaint from the victim’s mother, Ghani Bibi, against Lalon. But the accused is on the run. Officers are conducting raids to nab him.”
