An Assistant Sub-Inspector of the District Intelligence Branch, north 24-Parganas district, committed suicide in Kolkata on Friday morning by jumping in front of the Dn Kamrup Express as it entered the Howrah station.

Police said Tarun Kumar Dutta, 50, a resident of Shibpur, Howrah, before taking the extreme step sent an SMS to his wife saying, "I don't want to live any further."

The police, however, said the exact reason behind the ASI's death was yet to be ascertained.

Dutta was on duty at Barasat on Thursday night and while returning home in a taxi, he left his luggage along with his service revolver in the cab. Later after he failed to trace the taxi, he went to the Shibpur police station where he was advised to lodge a complaint.

"Without filing a complaint he told us that he would be coming back soon, but he didn't return. Later, we came to know that Dutta had committed suicide," a police officer of Shibpur police station said.
