A major section of the Trinamool Congress leadership is unhappy that instead of being censured, a foul-mouthed party leader was honoured by the TMC with an award on Wednesday.

The leader in question is of course actor-turned-Trinamool Lok Sabha member from Krishnagar, Tapas Pal.

After his call to Trinamool workers at a public meeting to thrash CPI(M) cadres with shoes wherever they are spotted, he was not censored by the party leadership.

Rather, he was awarded the Mahanayak award by none other than the state chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, on the occasion of the death anniversary of matinee idol Uttam Kumar here on Wednesday.

“What Tapas said in the public meeting was aired by all the television channels and reported by all newspapers. And even after that he was awarded,” said a high-profile minister of the state cabinet on condition of anonymity.

Similarly, this section of the Trinamool leadership feels that unless and until leaders such as Pal, party’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, state transport and sports minister Madan Mitraand Trinamool MLA from Labhpur Monirul Islam are censured by the leadership, they would continue making such remarks and embarrass the party.

Actress-turned politician and party MP from Birbhum Shatabdi Roy was the first one to express public displeasure over the remarks made by Mondal and Islam after Mondal called for bombing police vehicles and Islam threatened to behead a local Congress leader.

“Such comments are unwarranted and are made to receive cheers and claps from the supporters,” Roy said.

Another member of the state cabinet said that the problem is that since the time the possibilities of a change in the political power situation in West Bengal became evident, several fly-by-night individuals joined the party who have never gone through the acid taste of struggle against CPI(M) as a ruler.

“Unfortunately, these sort of individuals are occupying top posts in several pockets in the state, the result of which is reflected in the language and actions. I personally feel that such new entrants should be kept sitting on the sidelines for sometime before being elevated as a leader,” he said.
