Efforts by lawyers representing state transport minister Madan Mitra went in vain as a local court, on Thursday, turned down his bail plea and sent him back to judicial custody till March 26 in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. All efforts by the battery of lawyers representing state transport minister Madan Mitra went in vain as a local court on Thursday turned down the bail plea of the minister and sent him to judicial custody till March 26 in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.

The panel of lawyers argued that the minister should be released immediately as he is critically ill and is undergoing treatment at the intensive therapy unit (ITU) of SSKM Hospital.

Late on Wednesday, Mitra was shifted from the Woodburn Block of the hospital where he was admitted with respiratory problems. Mitra developed severe chest pain and was not able to speak properly since Wednesday evening.

The CBI lawyer argued that Mitra’s detention was required as more material evidence had been collected and he needs to be interrogated. CBI sleuths have not interrogated him for a long time as he is not keeping well. The CBI counsel pleaded that the minister should undergo treatment under judicial custody. The court’s decision is considered a major setback for Mitra and his lawyers had hoped that ill health coupled with the release of former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Srinjoy Bose would help Mitra get bail on Thursday.
