Bangladeshi 'smuggler' killed in BSF firing

kolkata Updated: Jan 20, 2009 15:13 IST

A Bangladeshi national was on Monday shot dead by Border Security Force jawans while allegedly tried to smuggle cattle near Chatipur border outpost in Nadia district of West Bengal.

Police said a nine-member gang tried to take away cattle to the Bangladesh side when they were spotted by patrolling border guards.

As the Bangladeshis did not stop despite being asked by the BSF to stop, the jawans opened two rounds of fire.

One Bangladeshi national, later identified as Amanullah of Shyamkur village in the neighbouring country, was killed on the spot, while the rest of the gang escaped.
