As per his wishes, Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu's eyes were donated to a private eye bank on Sunday.
The eyes were removed by doctors of the Susrut Eye Foundation after the Communist icon died at the AMRI hospital in Kolkata on Sunday morning.
"We will conduct a few pathological tests to determine the condition of the cornea and other parts. Then according to a recipient's list we will zero in on those who can benefit from eye transplant," said the foundation's secretary Ratish Chandra Paul, an ophthalmologist.
However, Paul said the name of the recipient/recipients will not be made public as it is prohibited under the Organ Transplant Act.
Basu had pledged to donate his eyes in 2003.
