The Bengal government has chalked out a plan to hand over the 324-odd Industrial Training Institutes (ITI)s in the state to private companies. It is, however, calling the proposal, “adoption of ITIs by private companies.”
Chief secretary Sanjay Mitra met a three-member delegation from the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry at Writers’ Buildings on Monday where he officially placed a proposal in this regard. The delegation was lead by chamber president Kallol Dutta.
Dutta told reporters that although many private companies are willing to adopt the ITIs, there are two problems. “The first is that many ITIs do not have the requisite infrastructure. A private company recently adopted an ITI in South 24-Parganas’ Amtala. But now it is facing a problem since the institute does not even have a power connection,” Dutta said. He also said that the government should develop the infrastructure of these ITIs before offering them to private companies. Also, it should give the companies a chance to run the institutes with a free hand so far as fixing the curriculum and fee structure is concerned.
