By arresting a cable operator, the Kolkata Police claimed to have cracked the murder case of a 42-year old homemaker from Baguiati in the city's northern fringes. The woman had befriended the 33-year-old youth on Facebook.
"We have cracked the case. Abhishek Majumdar, whom we have arrested from Bolpur on Wednesday, has admitted that he had murdered the housewife. Investigations revealed none else was involved in the crime," a police officer told HT.
Police said Majumdar had befriended Soma Ghosh – the victim – on Facebook. Majumdar had created a fake profile in the social networking site using the name Nandan Sen.
After chatting with a Facebook friend for only 15 days, the 42-year-old Baguiati homemaker Ghosh agreed to meet him.
Accordingly, Majumdar reached Ghosh's Rabindrapalli apartment on Monday afternoon. It was Soma's daughter who found her body after returning from school around 3 pm. Her throat was slit and there were multiple stab wounds on her chest and gashes on her hands, indicating she put up a fight.
"We questioned her husband, Sujit Ghosh, and a family friend who also had a link in the Facebook chats between Soma and Abhishek. A neighbour informed us that he had escorted a man to her flat around 1pm on Tuesday," an officer said.
The neighbour told the police that the person whom he escorted to Soma Ghosh's flat stammered. That eventually worked as a vital clue.
Police started scanning chat records of Soma's Facebook profile. The fake name on Facebook did confuse police for some time but it wasn't long before they zeroed in on and her call records and zeroed in on Majumdar aka Nandan through Soma's call records.
"We tracked down the mobile from which the last call had been made and landed up at Abhishek's doorstep on Wednesday night," the investigating officer added.
But why did Majumdar – whose father works with a local news channel in Bolpur – murdered Soma?
"Majumdar claimed that he wanted a 'closer relationship' that Soma strongly opposed. She was the mother of a 17-year-old girl. But the youth could not reconcile with the rejection and tried to force himself on her. He told us that he had murdered her in a fit of rage," an investigating officer added.
Police came to know that there was a scuffle between the two and in a fit of rage, Majumdar picked up a kitchen equipment used to prepare rotis and a knife from the kitchen and attacked her. When she fell on the floor unconscious after the beating, Majumdar slit her throat and fled the spot.
