Thirty-eight-year-old Mohammed Babool, a Trinamool Congress leader from Beniapukur, was brutally hacked up by dreaded local criminal Chattan Kallu who attacked him with a butchers knife on Sunday night. Babool received severe injuries to his throat and is struggling for life at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

“Around 6.30 pm Kallu suddenly entered Babool’s residence Dihi Serarampore Road and hit him with a chopper, generally used by butchers. Three friends of Babool’s received injuries when they tried to save him. Kallu is a noted criminal of the locality,” said a senior officer of the Beniapukur police station.

Police rushed to the Calcutta National Medical College to record the victim’s statement. Kallu is absconding. Trinamool leaders from ward 59 said that Babool was targeted by Kallu and his gang for raising his voice against the illegal construction of high-rise buildings in and around Beniapukur, Topsia and Tiljala areas.
They claimed that Kallu had attacked Babool more than on one occasion before.

“We have filed police complaints after the previous instances as well. Although Babool is quite close to the chief minister, police refused to take action against Kallu, as a section of influential Trinamool leaders are behind him.

The political scenario in Beniapukur is the same as in Garden Reach,” said advocate Sourya Ghosh, a Trinamool steering committee member.
