Former West Bengal chief minister and CPI(M) politburo member, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Monday rekindled the Singur issue saying that flawed policies of the Mamata Banerjee government has turned what would have been a showpiece for the state into a graveyard.
Even after losing power in 2011, former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is still a crowd-puller as Monday’s impressive footfall looks set to rejuvenate the Left.
“Progress and development could have been achieved in Singur. But as a result of the flawed and hurriedly pushed policies of the state government, Singur today has turned into a graveyard,” the former state chief minister said while addressing a rally of over 1.50 lakh party activists organised by CPI(M)’s North 24-Parganas district committee.
Speaking on the occasion, he also slammed the government’s land policy. “Because of the flawed land policy, the state is lagging behind in industrial development. The industries that we managed to bring in our times are leaving. Because of the land policy, even critical infrastructure projects in the areas of road expansion or power generation are getting stuck. The thermal power project at Katwa in Burdwan has got stuck because of the land policy. For similar reasons, road expansion projects of NHAI are in a state of limbo,” Bhattacharjee said.
Speaking on the occasion, he also said that on one hand while over 50 farmers have committed suicide being unable to get the minimum support price for paddy, the state government is claiming that only one farmer has died.
“Similarly in case of dengue deaths, the state government is under-quoting the figure. The state chief minister, is peddling untruths every day,” Bhattacharjee said.
Speaking on the occasion, the Left Front chairman and the CPI(M) state secretary in West Bengal described Trinamool’s rally at New Delhi against FDI in retail as an act of sheer hypocrisy.
“The proposal of FDI in retail first came during the NDA regime, where Mamata Banerjee was a minister. But she did not oppose them. Now she is opposing it to prove herself a bigger leftist than the official leftist parties. In reality, she is a pseudo leftist,” Biman Bose said.
