Chief minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was defeated in Jadavpur constituency by Manish Gupta of Trinamool Congress by 16777 votes. Gupta has served as the chief secretary of Bengal under both Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharejee. The fight at Jadavpur was between a retired IAS officer and his former boss.

On July 21, 1993, when Gupta was the home secretary, the police had fired at a Youth Congress rally in Kolkata led by its then chief Mamata killing 13 party men. This was an incident, which made Mamata Banerjee vow to drive Left Front out of power from Bengal some day. Explaining away the incident Mamata now claims it was not Gupta but Buddhadeb who as the minister concerned had ordered the firing.

Jadavpur Constituency however has proved lucky for Mamata, it was this constituency which gave her the first taste of victory. In 1984, Mamata Banerjee created history when she beat veteran politician Somnath Chatterjee of CPI (M) in Lok Sabha election from Jadavpur. This time the loss of Bhattacherjee will be regarded as the loss of face for the Left Front government.
