Prior to his statement in the Assembly on Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday met the father of Rouvanjit Rawla, student of La Martiniere for Boys school who allegedly hanged himself after being caned.
There was no briefing about the meeting at the state secretariat.
Assembly Speaker HA Halim had on Wednesday directed the chief minister to make a statement in the House on the steps taken in connection with the alleged suicide case.
Thirteen-year-old Rouvanjit, a student of class VIII, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his home after being caned by the school principal on February 12, according to a complaint lodged with the police by his father, Ajoy Rawla.
The charges are being investigated by the Kolkata Police and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
The state government had earlier announced that it was planning to set up an appropriate body to deal with corporal punishment in schools.
