The devastating fire in a multi-storyed building in Burrabazar housing markets continued to rage on the fourth day on Tuesday with flames still leaping out of the top floor even as fire brigade and Army personnel were battling to bring the blaze under control.
The sophisticated ladder requisitioned from the Haldia Petrochemicals was used to spray water on the 13th floor where the fire was still raging, official sources said.
Fire tenders continued to ferry water from the nearby sources to contain the fire, they said.
Fire services minister Pratim Chatterjee had said that huge quantity of inflammable material was stored inside the 'unauthorised' building, which did not have fire-fighting arrangements.
Local MP Sudhanshu Sil who was present in the area, said that the fire was still not under control.
Although the intensity of the fire was reduced, it again started raging in the top floor due to intense heat and wind, he said.
Meanwhile, industrialist BK Birla along with his wife visited the area and announced Rs two crore as relief to the poor who suffered in the unprecedented blaze.
He said: "it is very unfortunate that the fire could not be doused even after four days. Many people have suffered huge losses. It is very sad".
