The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation (KMRC), the executing agency for the East-West Metro project, and the state government to finalise the route alignment by August 1. Justice Soumitra Pal, in his directive, said that the KMRC finalise the alignment by August 1. Justice Pal gave the interim order on Thursday to make sure that no time is lost on the pretext of differences among stakeholders.
The high court directive also stated that KMRC should finalise the site of the retrieval shaft by March 16. On Wednesday, Justice Pal had suggested that the contractor of the under-river tunnel job, Transtonnelstory Afcon JV (TAJ), resume its work on April 2. While pleading on this suggestion, the counsel for TAJ, Ranjan Bachhawat, said he cannot start the job unless site of retrieval shaft is finalised. “The tunnel-boring machine (TBM) would start moving from Howrah Maidan and would cross the Ganges under water before reaching Dalhousie. If the TBM starts moving, it cannot move backwards. The only option is to install a retrieval shaft somewhere around Writers’ Building and KMRC should select a site for the retrieval shaft at the earliest,” said Bachhawat.
