Trinamool Congress MP and the chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee suffered injuries that included a fracture to a bone below the left eye when his car overturned near Singur on Tuesday evening. But eyewitness accounts indicated the 28-year old MP was lucky to escape serious injuries as his car overturned and spun a couple of times before landing on its roof.
He was rushed to Belle Vue Clinic where the doctors treated him for injuries below and above the eye but radiological tests could not detect any serious injury to the head or neck.
The chief minister ordered a joint investigation by the Special Task Force of Kolkata Police and CID to find out whether there was a conspiracy behind the accident.
Abhishek is the Trinamool MP from Diamond Harbour, the chief of the party’s youth wing and is widely regarded as the heir apparent of Bengal’s ruling party.
“He is stable but there are reasons to worry. The bone below the eye has suffered a fracture resulting in swelling. There is a head injury for which he will be kept under observation for 48 hours. But his condition is stable and there is no need of any surgery at this moment. He is fully conscious,” said Jayanta Sengupta, one of the doctors in the 14-member medical team. The team includes eye specialists, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons.
A team of surgeons will check him everyday to decide on follow-up treatment.
“His left eye has been bandaged. He has sustained injuries just below the eye (maxillary bone) and above the eye (orbital bone),” said a doctor who examined Banerjee.
Three security men who were travelling in the pilot car were also injured, but none of the injuries were serious.
Prima facie the accident took place in rather unusual conditions. The pilot car first hit a milk van that was being towed by a vehicle. Abhishek’s vehicle that was close behind the pilot car, also hit the milk van and spun out of control.
According to sources, the director general of police told the chief minister that the driver of the pilot car dozed off and hit the milk van.
Party colleague Manas Bhuniya, who is a trained doctor and was trailing Abhishek in another car, told HT that he saw the car spin a couple of times. The vehicle in which Abhishek was travelling was a Scorpio and the airbags inflated possibly limiting the extent and degree of injury. Bhuniya did not suffer any injury.
The spot of the accident was on Durgapur Expressway, about 50 kms from Kolkata. The Trinamool leaders were returning to Kolkata from Berhampore.
The chief minister and a number of Trinamool leaders rushed to Belle Vue Clinic in the evening. President Pranab Mukherjee, too, enquired about his health.
