Chaos in Howrah court, prisoners engage in fights

Chaos prevailed in Howrah court on Tuesday, with two undertrials engaged in a brawl inside the crowded lock-up, prompting the police to separate the two and restore order, police said.

The two undertrials - Guddu Singh and Ganga Roy - were brought to the Howrah court for trial. This was the the third such incident inside the court lock-up in the last six months.

Though the cause of the brawl was yet to be known, District Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Singh said that it might be due to overcrowding inside the lock-up.

"When the lock-up in the court can accommodate only 40 to 50 prisoners, we have to keep more than 100. This space constraint occasionally irritates the prisoners and they get engaged in bitter fights. We have requested the District Magistrate to arrange for a larger space so that we can accommodate more inmates," Singh said.
