After Mamata Banerjee the painter, it is now Mamata Banerjee the lyricist and possible singer.
As part of her cultural pursuits, the West Bengal chief minister has written lyrics, which will be set to tune by composer Jeet Gannguli. What’s more, she may sing them.
Gannguli said on the phone: “I recently met Didi at a function at Town Hall to celebrate 100 years of the national anthem, and I learnt she was a very good singer. She told me she had been writing since college and had also written songs. Later, we discussed a project in which I will compose for the songs she has written.”
“I have heard her sing and her voice has a good texture. Bengal will get a new singer in the form of Didi and I told her the project would be incomplete if she didn’t sing.”
Gannguli has several musical hits to his name. Industry sources say he is referred as Jeet ‘Hit’ Gannguli. His Bollywood debut was with Pritam in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. However, the duo soon drifted apart. Now, Mumbai-based Gannguli is composing for Bollywood film Blood Money, starring Kunal Khemu.
However, the people concerned did not divulge the nature of the lyrics or even the purpose of the project.
“Arup Biswas (Trinamool Congress MLA) is also part of it. Whenever I visit Kolkata, I will try to sit with Didi and discuss this project. If we are able to lock it, it will be like a life-time achievement for me,” Gannguli said.
