Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s election agent Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya on Monday lodged a complaint with the chief electoral officer alleging that an unknown person was making calls identifying himself as the chief minister and asking to vote in favour of Bhattacharjee.

Chief electoral officer Sunil Gupta, after receiving the complaint, ordered an investigation by ADG (law and order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha. Bhattacharyya said the person is trying to malign the chief minister’s image by threatening the person, identifying himself as the chief minister.

Gupta said the call was coming from the number 1166041000 to a mobile phone of the number 9836564588. The police, after checking the number, found that the call had been made from Delhi.

Experts said the police could trace the caller with the help of the service provider. The police have already traced the identity of the person who received the call.

Later, it was reported to the police that many persons had received such phone calls asking to cast their vote in favour of the chief minister.

“If there was anything wrong or if there is any other motive behind making such calls, then the police will take proper action,” said Gupta.
