Arabul Islam can’t be interrogated because police in the state have no time, apparently being too busy with the President’s visit and the chief minister’s next trip to the districts to deal with such matters.
On January 20, with the police in tow, President Pranab Mukherjee visited a school in Bishnupur where he had been head master once upon a time. On January 21 chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be attending a mass meeting at Canning.
Arabul, meanwhile, is due to be produced at the Baruipur ACJM court, having been remanded in police custody. His visit to the court was delayed after he was referred and admitted to SSKM Hospital owing to poor health.
On Monday, the police will focus their attention on the mass rally at Canning, Sunderbans, called by the chief minister. They are apparently so busy that they haven’t had time to investigate cases. Only on January 16, cops wrapped up the Gangasagar Mela, the biggest event in the district at which 6000 policemen were deployed from across the state.
“We have no time to interrogate Arabul because of the back to back, high level programmes of the President and the chief minister,” a senior police officer said.
Asked whether the arrested Bhangar strongman would be remanded to further custody, the officer refused to comment.
“He will not be remanded to further police custody, as cops prefer jail custody. They are under a lot of pressure already and they will want Arabul off their hands and will probably send him to jail,” sources said.
