A devastating fire broke out at a paint factory in Cossipore on Sunday night. Although no casualties or injuries were reported, the strong wind helped the fire spread across the locality, making fire fighters struggle to bring the situation under control.
“The fire started around 5.45pm. It engulfed three or four structures that were stuffed with inflammable articles, such as plastic, paints and chemicals. We had to press 22 fire tenders into service for fighting the fire,” said Tapan Ghosh, deputy directory of West Bengal fire and emergency services.
According to Ghosh, the fire was tamed by 9.30 pm, but the source of the fire is yet to be identified.
Meanwhile, when fire and emergency services minister Javed Khan reached the spot, he had to face the wrath of the locals. The minister was gheraoed for nearly two minutes, before cops intervened and dispersed the mob.
“They are not locals. Perhaps the local CPI(M) leaders sent their workers to malign me in front of the locals,” said Khan.
