A district court granted conditional anticipatory bail to Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee on Friday, asking him to surrender within three weeks.

Banerjee is facing rape charges brought against him by a Bengaluru-based software professional, who accused the 38-year-old MP of getting intimate with her after promising marriage.

“The judge has granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 5,000. The court has also asked him to surrender within three weeks,” said Banerjee’s advocate Anirban Guha Thakurta.

“We submitted some documents to the court that prove that the charges brought by the complainant were not true. The bail was granted on the basis of those documents,” said Banerjee’s lawyer. The government counsel opposed the plea for anticipatory bail.

Banerjee, who has made a mark as an efficient speaker in Rajya Sabha, faced troubles in his political and personal life in quick succession. In the third week of September, CPI(M) that sent him to Rajya Sabha expelled him from the party for “anti-party and anti-communist role”.

“Even after repeated cautioning by the state committee, Banerjee failed to rectify himself and persistently continued to malign the image of the party by various means,” the party statement said.

On October 10, the Bengaluru-based woman lodged a complaint at Balurghat police station. The case was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Earlier, she twitted her allegations against the MP and tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

CID officers later visited the residence of Banerjee at Garfa in south Kolkata and handed over summons to appear for questioning. But he did not turn up.

On Friday, CID questioned Rabin Bairagi, the driver of the MP.

Ritabrata Banerjee became an MP in 2014. The controversy has cost him dear with intimate videos and pictures of Banerjee circulating in the social media.
