The Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued a gag order on Tuesday for members of parties forming the Left Front.
This comes six days after Fisheries Minister Kiranmay Nanda advocated early assembly polls in the state.
Nanda belongs to the Democratic Socialist Party.
“Left Front partners can have opinions but if they have something to say on policy matters, (the issue) should be discussed in Front meetings, not in public,” said Left Front Chairman Biman Bose, 66. “As the biggest constituent of the coalition, the CPI(M) has to have more responsibility,” he added.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was present at the meeting.
At the meeting, leaders did not discuss CPI General Secretary A.B. Bardhan’s comment in Delhi on Monday that as the biggest party in the Left Front, the CPI(M) has to take maximum responsibility for the reversals in the Lok Sabha polls of 2009.
“The CPI leader told me he didn’t comment (in the way) it has been reported. Anyway, we will have a talk on this issue,” Bose said.
West Bengal CPI leaders tried to play down Bardhan’s comments. “His words have been misrepresented by the print media,” CPI State Secretary Manju Majumdar told Hindustan Times.
However, Nanda skipped Tuesday’s meeting. Nanda’s party, which has four MLAs in the 294-member assembly, was represented by Janmejoy Ojha.
Ojha refused to comment on the gag order.
“Nanda has been irregular at Left Front meetings in the past few months. Hewas not present at the Left Front rally in Kolkata on Monday, where Bhattacharjee and other senior leaders were present,” a senior CPI leader said.
Other leaders too hinted that Nanda was keeping a distance from the alliance.
Revolutionary Socialist Party leader and Public Works Department Minister Kshiti Goswami, a critic of the government on land acquisition issues, said: “This is not a gag order but a disciplinary guideline we should all follow.”
