For a ‘regional party’, Trinamool Congress has always displayed an appetite for global icons. Last year TMC chief Mamata Banerjee promised to beautify Kolkata on the lines of London, earlier this year she invited superstar Shah Rukh Khan to be West Bengal’s brand ambassador, and now Kolkata Police has chosen cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as its poster boy over ‘son of the soil’ Saurav Ganguly.
The posters, put up across Kolkata are part of a traffic awareness initiative, have an image of Tendulkar and the slogan Niyam mene rastaghat e, jemon Sachin cricket math e (Be alert on the road, just as Sachin is on field).
Quizzed about the choice of Tendulkar over Ganguly, additional commissioner, Kolkata police, Soumen Mitra explained that it was a studied choice. “Tendulkar is known for adherence to rules and discipline. Never has he deviated from this trait during his 22-year long career” said Mitra.
And what does Ganguly represent?
Dilip Banerjee, the deputy commissioner (traffic) of Kolkata Police said, “Saurav Ganguly is also a great batsman. But at times his batting is reminiscent of rash passengers getting on and off a moving bus. We have gone by Tendulkar’s landmarks and records.”
