In her trademark style, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee took charge of the situation soon after reaching the Calcutta Medical College Hospital around 11.30am and then to the nearby Kolkata Police Morgue.

She stayed there till 3pm, supervising identification of dead bodies and treatment of the injured after the blaze at the Surya Sen Market early on Wednesday.

She, along with her key cabinet colleagues and Trinamool Congress leaders, led the entire episode of the post mortem examination of the fire victims and handing over of the dead bodies to the bereaved relatives.

From time to time she was announcing the latest figure of identified bodies on a microphone at a camp.

Mamata was seen sitting beside police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayasthya and other top police officials and ministers at a makeshift camp in front of the police morgue. Sometimes, she was instructing the police chief and ministers what to do.

She was also virtually guiding the relatives how to identify the bodies of their nearest ones lying inside the morgue.
