The spate of violence continued in Barasat in north 24-Parganas on Monday, after a homeopathy doctor was killed for protesting against the abuse of a woman and by daughter by a number of inebriated thugs. The incident took place in Kadamgachai, under the jurisdiction of the Barasat police station.
On Monday, the doctor raised his voice when he saw some men beating up a woman and her daughter. All of them were drunk. Locals said that the area in which the incident took place is extremely crime prone.
The locality is home to five liquor shops that are frequented by the residents of the locality on a daily basis. The closely distributed liquor stores attract goons who drink alcohol and cause trouble there every day, and Monday was no different. Locals are disturbed and women eve-teased with alarming regularity. At 3.30pm on Monday, after steeping themselves in alcohol, a number of local thugs tried to peep into one of the houses in the area. The inmates of the house, a woman and her daughter, a Class 11 student, protested for which they were beaten up.
The doctor intervened and a heated exchange ensued, leading to an out-and-out scuffle. One of the thugs roughly pushed the doctor, throwing him against a beetle nut tree, and killing him instantly. Sources told HT that the doctor had been unwell, having recently undergone a bypass surgery.
Residents of the locality turned violent after the doctor's death, and went on a rampage. They attacked all the liquor stores, damaged and demolished them, and then set them on fire. The cops rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. No one was arrested in connection with the incident till late on Monday night. A police force was deployed at the Kadamgachi area in order to maintain law and order.
Earlier, in another incident, thugs snatched earring from a middle-aged woman on Monday morning. The incident took place at Bidhan Park early on Monday morning. Jyotshna Roy, the victim, was returning to her home after her morning walk when goons approached her from the back and pulled off her earrings. Her earlobe was severely damaged. When she turned around to see what happened, the miscreants pulled off the second earring, damaging the other earlobe as well. She had to be admitted to Barasat Hospital. Police said they were on the look out for the perpetrators.
Recently, an eve-teasing incident also took place in the area, followed by the molestation of a girl by a poolcar driver.
